Proverbs 9

Proverbs 9:1-18

SUMMARYEpic battle

OVERVIEWWisdom and folly offer their invitations.

BIG IDEAThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

KEY VERSEProverb 9:16–17 (folly’s invitation)
“Come in with me,” she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says, “Stolen water is refreshing; food eaten in secret tastes the best!”

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
Be careful to whom you’re listening. My wisdom calls but so does Satan’s folly. Folly’s voice is sweet and tantalizing, but listen carefully, and you’ll detect the pain and suffering she truly offers. Both of us invite all to come to dine with us. Folly speaks of the sweet and savory you’ll find in her delicacies. But once digested you’ll have cramps and wish you never took a bite. The aftertaste is evil, and you’ll call on me for help.

Listen to my voice instead. Listen to the instruction of wisdom. Her voice is clear and offers life. My food may appear dull compared to the extravagant buffet of folly, but when you eat from wisdom’s plate, it will taste like the best meal ever. You’ll want another bite and then another…and it will sit well in your stomach. It will strengthen your body and will give you clarity of thought, love in your heart, and vitality in your bones. You will want wisdom. Listen and discern.

NEXT STEP
Ask yourself, “Am I willing to listen to instruction from God and others who care about me? Am I willing to say the hard thing to those I care about it who may be making unwise choices?”
