Proverbs 17

Proverbs 17:1-28

SUMMARY: Love meter

OVERVIEWProverbs that provide a means to evaluate one’s heart.

BIG IDEAThe things you love reveal much about your heart, character, and faith.

KEY VERSE: Proverbs 17:9
Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
I know who and what you love by how you live. I want you to develop an eternal perspective and to seek and hunger for things with lasting value. Don’t always be attracted to people or items that sparkle. You can find meaning and satisfaction with an empty hand but a full heart. And pay attention to the words you speak and listen to. Deceitful, lying lips do not develop healthy friendships, nor do people who mock the poor and those who struggle. Instead, be a person who creates a culture of love and forgiveness. Learn the art of diffusing tense situations with care and respect for those involved. Seek friends who strive for the same.

Friends love at all times, but evildoers love rebellion. A wise person loves correction, but a wicked person loves deceit. Be wise in how you live, how you treat others, and in how you think and speak. Be a friend others can trust and pursue friendships with those who are trustworthy.

NEXT STEP
Evaluate what and who you love. Are those things and relationships healthy and life-giving? Is there anything you should continue doing or stop doing?
