Joshua 9

Joshua 9

Joshua 9:1-27

SUMMARYUnbelieving example

OVERVIEWThe Gibeonites, Israel’s neighbors, feared God more than Israel did. Israel failed to seek the Lord. They walked by sight rather than by faith.

BIG IDEADon’t make significant decisions without seeking the Lord.

KEY VERSEJoshua 9:14 (Israel deceived)
So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult the Lord.

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
There are reasons I want you to seek me. I know you, I know your weaknesses, and I know what you will face. I will direct you and give you wisdom. I will protect you from your most fierce enemy—yourself—but you’ve got to look to me and ask for direction. It’s easy to get excited about new opportunities or overwhelmed by challenges. Slow down. Learn to bring all things—the good and the bad—to me. Let me guide you.

Not only can you be your own worst enemy, but you’ve got another enemy. The devil prowls and is deceptive. Don’t make significant decisions apart from me. It’s tempting to take care of the “little” things yourself, but learn to pray like you breathe—without thinking. Stay in constant contact with me. Model faithfulness. The world publishes books and holds seminars on silence and meditation. I invented those! Even those who don’t follow me see my wisdom.

NEXT STEP
Seek God first in all situations. Practice pausing to pray frequently throughout the day. Don’t let prayer be a lucky charm, but see it as an opportunity to connect with the living God who knows you and loves you.
