SUMMARY: Jesus prays
OVERVIEW: Jesus reveals his heart and priorities in his prayer to God the Father. He focuses on the “world”—his observation of it and the disciples’ role in it—and uses the word eighteen times.
BIG IDEA: The world is not my home, but it is my place of ministry.
KEY VERSE: John 17:15–17 (Jesus prays)
I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. They do not belong to this world any more than I do. Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.
IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
As you follow me, there will be times you don’t feel at home in your earthly surroundings. I am transforming your mind, your desires, your choices, and your habits. Those who don’t know me won’t understand you. But you are where you are for a reason. Your presence as a believer impacts those who are lost, deceiving themselves, or searching for meaning. Don’t walk past them, ignoring their pain. Stop and get to know them. Make yourself available and point them my way.
Love those who believe in me and those who don’t. Seek peace with other Christ-followers. Do the hard work of removing any walls that separate you. The evil one enslaves the world, and it needs freedom through faith in me. Share the fantastic news that I offer that freedom. Live in such a way that your love for me and others is evident. Your relationships with other believers matter. Put effort towards making them healthy.
