Job 4:1-21

SUMMARYSinners suffer

OVERVIEWEliphaz attempts to minister to Job, but he fails to identify with Job and his unique situation.

BIG IDEAExperience has limitations.

KEY VERSEProverbs 16:21
The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive.

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
You can trust me, and my word is trustworthy, but the Bible is not a “how-to” manual. It is instructive, and the most important lesson is that I am with you and for you. Job’s friends meant well, but they got much of it wrong. They were not there for Job. They wanted to instruct him and fix him. Eliphaz refers to his life experience, but one’s experience is not always the best teacher. Experience has limitations, as one person’s experience is not necessarily another’s.

When you are in pain, you need a friend. The same is true when you have the chance to console someone. There may be a time to be critical but wait on my guidance and instruction for that.  Your presence, however, never goes out of style. It’s the perfect gift. It’s powerful. Be there for your friends. Be willing to pray for your friends. Be ready to serve them and their families in timely and practical ways.

NEXT STEP
Who is someone who needs a friend this week? Take time to visit or call that person and listen more than you speak. End your time together by praying for him or her.
