Jeremiah 38

Jeremiah 38:1-28

SUMMARYSunk

OVERVIEW: Jeremiah is taken from prison and thrown into a cistern, where he sinks into the mud. Zedekiah later rescues him from the cistern, hoping Jeremiah will have a more positive message for him from God. Jeremiah does not: surrender, and the city will be saved or continue to fight and be defeated.

BIG IDEAFear God more than those around you.

KEY VERSEJeremiah 38:20 (Jeremiah to Zedekiah)
“They will not hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared.”

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
Do not let fear prevent you from doing the right thing. Listen to me, trust me, and then follow me. I do not promise you an easy path, but I do promise to be with you. And when I am with you, you will be secure and in the best place possible. I will equip you to withstand any attack. Even death can not defeat you. I have overcome all, so you have nothing to fear.

You will hear competing voices vying for your attention. Be bold and courageous and focus on me. Do not succumb to the loud voices demanding you to go their way. Listen for my—often—quiet voice. I have your best interest in mind while others plead with you to go their way. They will say it is best for you, but usually, it is simply best for them. Following me will not be easy, but it will be gratifying and fulfilling. Make the hard choice to ignore others and walk with me, and in time you will discover it was the right choice.

NEXT STEP
Is anyone or anything preventing you from doing what God is calling you to do? Make a brief list of ways God has previously proven himself faithful. Ask God for the courage to take the step of faith you believe he is leading you to take. Ask a friend for support and take that next step.
