Jeremiah 26

Jeremiah 26:1-24

SUMMARYCommon sense

OVERVIEWThe people and leaders of Judah threaten Jeremiah’s life when he tells them to turn from their sin, but Jeremiah does not back down. He reminds them that God will change his mind about their discipline if they will only stop sinning and start obeying him.

BIG IDEAPeople do what they want to do rather than what they should do.

KEY VERSEJeremiah 26:8 (foolish response)
But when Jeremiah had finished his message, saying everything the Lord had told him to say, the priests and prophets and all the people at the Temple mobbed him. “Kill him!” they shouted.

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
I continue to invite you and everyone you know to follow me. As long as you are breathing, you have a chance to choose me and my way. But a day is coming when you stop breathing or when Jesus returns, where that invitation will no longer be available. Listen and obey, and share my message with others. Despite people’s choices thus far, I continue to extend my hand of grace. Take advantage of this good news. I love you and each person you see today and offer everyone life. Share this with everyone you know.

But be prepared to be rejected or ridiculed. This will not be a new response. People often choose to criticize the messenger than receive the message, and I don’t understand why. I know the power of sin is significant, but it crumbles under my offer. Pray for those with whom you have direct influence so that they make the common-sense choice to turn to me and receive life in this world and—most importantly—in the one to come.

NEXT STEP
Identify 1-2 people who are older and more mature in the faith. Invite them out to coffee and seek wisdom from them regarding something going on in your life or a goal you want to pursue. Don’t just listen to what you want to hear but listen and obey.
