Hebrews 4

Hebrews 4. rest

Hebrews 4:1-16

SUMMARY: Rest

OVERVIEWBecause of Jesus’ sacrifice, God receives us and we can rest. We no longer have to run the race of religion; instead, we can praise God for his goodness.

BIG IDEARest — God forgives you, and he has made your eternity secure.

KEY VERSEHebrews 4:9–11 (invitation to experience God’s rest)
So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
I want you to work hard and to strive to please me. But I want you to do so knowing I already am pleased, and there is nothing you can do or produce that will make me love you more. Instead, work hard because it provides refreshment and fulfillment. But I also want you to rest. Never choose work when it is your day of rest. When you rest, you remind yourself that I am God, and you are not. When you rest, you put your faith in me that I can rule the world without you.

Rest and know that all the promises in the Bible are correct. Rest and read my word. Rest in the truth that my word is alive and active. Rest and play with and enjoy family and friends. Rest and take a nap. Rest and speak with me. Rest in the knowledge that I am always available and that you can come to me anytime and receive mercy and find grace.

NEXT STEP
Plan your day of rest. Prepare for it the day before and then say “no” to all temptations and distractions. The world will go on without you. Rest.
