Genesis 26

Gen 26

Genesis 26:1-35

SUMMARY: Family sin

OVERVIEWIsaac repeats the family sin of deception by lying about his relationship with Rebekah.

BIG IDEA: Rise above family sin and establish a legacy of doing things God’s way.

KEY VERSE: Genesis 26:7 (A reminder to fear God and not man)
When the men who lived there asked Isaac about his wife, Rebekah, he said, “She is my sister.” He was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “They will kill me to get her, because she is so beautiful.”

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
You are not responsible for the sins of your family members. You are your own person, and I want you to walk with me, establishing your relationship with me. Live in such a way that your family is inspired and motivated to follow me. You can’t make them act a certain way or believe what you believe. Don’t even try. That’s my job. But you can love them, and you can follow me, regardless of the cost.

You may have to deal with the consequences of your family’s sin, but their actions do not identify you. I am your identity. I am the one who brings new life where there is pain and hope where there is despair. Focus on me and listen to and follow my voice. If others talk down or frown upon your family name, keep your eyes on me. Pray for those who persecute you, yet stand by and support those you love. You are my child, and your family is mine as well. Pray for the Spirit to draw them to me and for your family to leads others to me.

NEXT STEP
Reach out to your family members and ask them how you can pray for them. Pray over the phone or in person. Then follow up in a few weeks to see how they’re doing.
