Ecclesiastes 8

Ecclesiastes 8:1-17

SUMMARYDouble standard

OVERVIEW: We are to obey the authority figures in our lives and follow through on all we’ve committed to, even when it feels like life isn’t fair. We must live by faith in God, not by justice according to our terms.

BIG IDEA: It doesn’t seem fair, but the righteous suffer, and the wicked prosper. Be at peace with it, or it will consume you.

KEY VERSEEcclesiastes 8:12
But even though a person sins a hundred times and still lives a long time, I know that those who fear God will be better off.

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
Some things may appear meaningless on earth, but I remain in control. At times you will see or experience what seems illogical, but focus on me and continue to trust my plan. You may wonder why some suffer while others prosper, but you only observe short-term results while I have a long-range view.

Do not make choices based solely on how you benefit. Seek me and what I want to do in your life. I will direct you in ways that provide quick blessing, yet I will also take you on challenging and harsh roads. Keep trusting me. I am doing a work in and through you. Some will entice you with ways to get rich quickly or propel yourself ahead of your peers. I know your status and role in life. I want you to be content. There may be a time you experience what others claim you deserve. But my plan is always correct. Trust me and my way, and you will not regret it.

NEXT STEP
One of the more difficult gestures to practice is to bless those who have hurt you. It’s counterintuitive, but when tempted to express anger towards someone, pray a prayer of blessing for them instead.
