Deuteronomy 13:1-18

SUMMARYChoose wisely

OVERVIEWMoses warns Israel of ways they might be led astray: through false prophets or even family and friends.

BIG IDEADon’t let friends or relatives distract you or keep you from following God. Stand your ground and choose God’s way.

KEY VERSEDeuteronomy 13:4 (Moses to Israel)
It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
There will always be people who offer a new way to live, a new god to follow, a new rule to practice. Avoid those people. Stay away from them and encourage others to do the same. You may be surprised to discover that sometimes it’s friends and family. Remind them who I am and that I love them and want them to follow me.

Some will speak with authority and have beautiful stories to tell. Do not be charmed. I am the voice you need to hear. I am the GPS to follow. I want you to be friendly to all, but you don’t have to be friends with everyone. Some will nudge you forward in your faith. Others will build a wall. Oddly, sometimes it won’t be obvious. But I will clarify for you. Listen to me and follow me. Stay focused on who I am and what I say.

NEXT STEP
Be honest. Are your friends good for your faith? Identify who helps you grow and who prevents you from growing. Invest your time with friends who help you develop into a healthier follower of Jesus. Don’t avoid the other group, but be mindful of how you use your time.
