SUMMARY: Wrestling match
OVERVIEW: Jacob learns that his brother Esau is coming to meet him with 400 men. Fearing the worst, he divides his family so Esau’s men could not attack them at once and sends a gift ahead to greet Esau. Then, later that evening, Jacob wrestles with God. God allows Jacob to overcome, blesses him, and renames him Israel.
BIG IDEA: Like a loving father, God is available and ready to wrestle. Bring your fears or doubts to God.
KEY VERSE: Genesis 32:10–11 (Jacob’s prayer)
I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant. When I left home and crossed the Jordan River, I owned nothing except a walking stick. Now my household fills two large camps! O Lord, please rescue me from the hand of my brother, Esau. I am afraid that he is coming to attack me, along with my wives and children.
IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
I am strong, I am your creator, and I am not afraid of your doubts or questions. Don’t be scared to present them to me. I welcome them! There are answers, even when you don’t understand them. Just as a child may not understand electricity, you may not grasp all I have for you despite my instruction. You may never understand all that you want this side of heaven. But in time, you will see clearly. Until then, some answers will require your patience and faith.
Bring your questions and concerns to me. They are tools that will help mold and shape your mind and character. At times they will also inspire you to serve in ways you were previously unprepared. I have a plan for your life, and your fear or doubt or curiosity is a seed that will grow in blessings. Don’t ignore your questions, and don’t stifle your doubts. Bring them to me, and let’s wrestle together.
