SUMMARYEvil mother

OVERVIEWAhaziah became king, but he did evil in the eyes of the Lord, “for his mother encouraged him to act wickedly” (verse 3).

BIG IDEAObey your parents except when instruct you to do evil.

KEY VERSE2 Chronicles 22:3–4 (Ahaziah described)
Ahaziah also followed the evil example of King Ahab’s family, for his mother encouraged him in doing wrong. He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, just as Ahab’s family had done. They even became his advisers after the death of his father, and they led him to ruin.

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
Whether you have grown up in a healthy home or not, you are accountable to me. Seek me and learn and obey my word. You are wise to seek input from others and be a student in life. But, ultimately, I am the one to follow. Hopefully, your parents and advisors will counsel you in a way consistent with my instruction, but if not, follow me. I am everything you will ever need, so focus on me.

And when others lead you astray, be brave and courageous to do what is right. Jehosheba lived differently. She saw the wickedness done by Athaliah and protected Joash from certain death. Jehosheba risked her life to protect the innocent. She put me and my ways first and disobeyed wicked authority. You do the same. Don’t act impulsively, but seek me. And when I lead you, live courageously. That type of lifestyle may be frightening, but it may also be life-changing for others.

NEXT STEP
Beware of only listening to those who agree with you. Seek God and wise counsel from others, even if it’s not what you want to hear. Also, seek input from those who disagree with you to listen to a perspective you may never have considered. Ultimately, make a prayerful decision based on God’s word.
