OVERVIEWPaul provides qualifications for overseers/elders and deacons.

BIG IDEALive in a way that people recognize your faith before you share it.

KEY VERSE1 Timothy 3:14-15 (Paul to Timothy)
I am writing these things to you now, even though I hope to be with you soon, so that if I am delayed, you will know how people must conduct themselves in the household of God. This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and foundation of the truth.

IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
These traits for church leaders are not limited to those called to serve as overseer or deacon. I want everyone in the church to pursue excellence in these areas and to develop these traits. I am more concerned about your development of character than skill.  You can learn skills quickly, but character is formed over time and requires a willing heart and teachable spirit. I want you to grow in your ability to perform specific tasks but focus on becoming a person of character and strength.

Which of the traits listed in this chapter do you struggle with the most? Is there one in which you find it challenging to develop? Call on me. Invite me into that area of your life. Allow me to shine a spotlight on any dark area that requires attention. Ask trusted friends to come alongside you and help you grow in those areas. Don’t try to be the person I’m calling you to be on your own. Character development is a team sport. Let me coach you while others support my work in you.

NEXT STEP
Commit to growing in one of the traits in this chapter. Pray, asking God to reveal one area in which he wants you to grow. Ask 1-2 trusted friends for their opinion. Make it a long term goal to improve in that area, praying regularly for God’s help. Invite someone you respect who is strong in that area out for coffee. Ask him or her for ideas to help you grow that trait in your life.
