SUMMARY: Halfhearted
OVERVIEW: Solomon allowed his love for women to be a distraction. His heart was no longer entirely devoted to the Lord, and he followed other gods.
BIG IDEA: Guard your heart. Keep it soft and moldable for God.
KEY VERSE: 1 Kings 11:4 (the result of unfaithfulness)
In Solomon’s old age, they [Solomon’s wives] turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely faithful to the Lord his God, as his father, David, had been.
IF GOD WROTE YOU A LETTER
I want a relationship with you for your entire life. I want you to seek me and follow me all day and every day. And I want your whole heart. Don’t limit your love for me and service to me to times when you’re interested or inspired. Don’t confine your faithfulness to times when you see evidence of my work. Follow me always. Follow me when you’re blessed, when you’re distraught, when you’re hopeful, and when you’re confused. Follow me right now.
Keep your eyes on me regardless of your circumstances because I will not change, and I am here for you. The things of the world come and go. The next hot item will soon take the attention away from what you think you have to have now. The person you want to meet, the one you’re convinced can improve your life will disappoint you. I will never disappear nor dissatisfy. I am everything you need. Let me feed and fuel your heart—all of it. Enjoy the things of the world from a distance, but don’t allow them to fill your heart. Instead, consume my love and follow my guidance.
NEXT STEP
Evaluate your life and identify 2-3 things or people who might prevent you from the type of growing relationship God wants to have with you. Ask a few friends to identify any distractions in your life. Pick one to focus on this week, and choose to pursue God when your heart would typically want to do something else.
